I had both dogs and cats as a child. I was very attached to my childhood dog and heartbroken when she disappeared. That said, as an adult I am definitely more of a cat guy. For one thing, they’re less work. And I’m basically emotionally avoidant, to put it in terms of attachment theory, so I appreciate cats’ standoffishness. They keep a certain distance. You have to let them come to you. They’re less like clingy, adoring children than like bad roommates or high-maintenance girlfriends. They seem to appeal to misanthropes — Céline, Stanley Kubrick, William S. Burroughs were all huge cat guys.Cats are low maintenance. They can also be neurotic. Which might explain some of their owners...
